The event is potluck lunch at Starkey park, co-ordinates are for the picnic tables in the cabin camping area! Bring your food back then move cars out into the lots listed below.
Come one, come all to the Jay B Starkey Wilderness Presserve Geoevent.
My wife & I, along with friends have been placing caches in this park for the past several months & thought it was about time to have a Geoevent here!
The park is located in western Pasco county on 8,069 acres & is easily accessible from SR 54 via Starkey Blvd. (Entrance to Longleaf).
The park's normal hours are dawn to dusk.
The park has several hiking trails as well as a horseback trail & bike trail. Picnic shelters through out the park as well as playgrounds for the kids.
There are currently a total of 33 caches in the park ranging from easy to hard & virtual, traditional & my favorite, multi. They range in size from micro to 5 gallon bucket.
Come for the day or the weekend.
Camping is available both tent & cabin.
The cabins have electric but no A/C.
For the main tent area & cabins, the cost is $15.00 per night for the cabins & $5.00 per night for up to 2 tents per site.
There is primative camping which is $0.00 (that's right, FREE) but for those, you have to pack everything in & out!
To reserve your campsite you will need to come to the information Kiosk listed below. They will not take reservations by phone. If need be, we can help with any camping reservations. They require the money at time of reservation. Money orders only made out to "Pasco County Board of Commissioners". Please contact me if you wish to camp & can't come ahead of time to make your own reservation. If you can make your own reservations, they do take cash & personal checks with ID.
I will have several new caches waiting for those who attend to find, they will be released on 09/23/06.
My family & I will be on site for the entire weekend & we are looking forward to meeting as many as want to come.
*** SPECIAL NOTE ***
Starting in October some parts of the park will be closed to the public due to construction work that will be taking place to upgrade the water pipes that run through the park from the well fields to the neighboring counties. This work, I have been told, will last in to 2007.
Hope to see you there!
Please R.S.V.P. so we can get an idea as to how many will be attending & include what you will be bringing. Much as I love potatoe salad, I'd hate for it to be the only thing on the menu! For those of you who will be bringing large or heavy items, you can drive through the cabin area, we will have several picnic tables & you can drop your stuff off there & then park your car. The parking in the camping areas are for registered campers only but there is a large parking area at the corral as well as other locations through out the park. If you park in a parking lot other than the corral, you will want your bikes unless you enjoy a good hike! I've loaded the co-ordinates of the parking lots! No animals are allowed in the camping areas except service animals.
The official start time is noon when we will break bread & have a great time together but you are welcome to early!
