Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
This cache is in the Parish of Sapcote (South Leicestershire). It is exactly as described in the title of the cache i.e. The cache is located in a SAFE and to gain access to the log book so as to register your visit you have to make a key to fit the lock.
The cache is a Steel Safe (Micro Cache 50 mm X 50 mm X 80 mm approx.) secured through a Concrete post via a large pad lock. The co-ordinates for the cache are N52.32,302 W001.16,157.
Please park at the given location (Park N 52.32,183 W001.16,655) or in another street off of the main road through the village “WHY!” Well the road through the village can become both busy and congested with residents parking along the road side so making it dangerous. The walk from a neighbouring street is 400 meters, and the walk along a well marked public footpath which leads back towards Croft is about 400 meters (Footpath Start at N52.32,208 W001.16,411). The path is flat and possibly accessible via wheel chair in dry weather (Off road wheel chair). How ever the cache sight it’s self can be over grown and boggy.
(Warning: This footpath passes right past an old disused quarry, DO NOT let children out of your sight as Kids Being Kids they will find a hole in the fencing and the drop is straight down 200 ft with NO RESCUE ACCESS).
Tip: When cutting your key Measure twice and cut once, The depth of the slots are more important than the width of the slots.
Stage 1:
Please down load the Engineers Drawing and Pictures of how your key should look from the sight. If you have trouble with this please e-mail me via Geo-caching and I will forward them onto you in higher JPEG resolution.
Stage 2:
If you are a model engineer, tool maker or similar please just follow the drawing provided in Stage 1. However if you are none of the above you can buy a key BLANK to suit the purpose from a good Hardware or Lock Shop. You need to buy a
Mortise Padlock KEY BLANK with A: 4 1/2 Gauge Shank & B: 10 Gauge Hole up the middle. (The LOCK used is branded Securit, Made In England). If you print out the Engineers Drawing and take this with you to the shop the owner should be able to fix you up. (The Hardware Shop in Stoney Stanton defiantly keeps these blank in stock £1.50 approx.).
Stage 3:
Some of you may already have the required tools to cut the key, but for those of you who do not you will need to buy or borrow. A: Small vice or clamp to hold the KEY BLANK when sawing and filing B: A Junior Hacksaw C: Small or Jewellery Needle Files D: A Good quality ruler or vernier calliper E: Permanent Marker F: Needle, Sharp Nail, or Scribe.
Stage 4:
Plan making your key and get out there and test it when done.
Stage 5:
If this cache is a hit I might treat you all and do a similar cache but with multiple safes and far more complex keys next year.
Note 1: Please be careful not to damage the cache LOCK or SAFE, the LOCK is greased and if your key is correct it should open very easily come rain, shine or frost “Please don’t try and force it”. If you think your key is correct but the lock will not open please can you contact me through Geo-caching and I will offer advice.
Note 2: Please do not try to access the safe by any other means, as I have put allot of time and effort into this cache to try and provide some fun and enjoyment for others. “Yes I too could take bolt croppers, a saw, grinder, or thermic lance but that’s not the name of the game”.
