Red Lion Mountain
My grandfather worked as a miner in the valley below back in the 1930's. He was an independent prospector that had much more ambition than luck. But few if any had much luck in the Red Lion Mining district. Ore went for about $12 per ton and mining activities lingered on until WWII which shut down most everything. A few mining claims were worked from the 50's until close to the present day. But this mining district never saw a "mother load". The big find was at Granite. Both the Red Lion Mine and the Granite mines (now a ghost town area) are visible from these coordinates. In addition, you can see Fred Burr, Echo, and Georgetown Lakes. The cache is a glass jar containing a log book plus a few small items. The jar is wrapped in plastic and is placed inside a large ammo container. If you are lucky enough to climb or ski to the top, the cache container will be easy to find. About 10 feet away from the cache box is a USGS elevation marker that reads 8770 ft. After reading the elevation, it reminded me of why my son and I were gasping for air when we reached the summit. Enjoy the view.
