Waneka Cemetery is an old and interesting country cemetery. It is well cared for and easy to walk around. The cache is not located at a grave or near a headstone. Please be respectful of the graves while you are there. Some of the older headstones are unstable, please watch young children carefully so they don't topple a stone or get hurt.
This is an awesome old cemetery filled with history. The year of 1881 was a rough one for many families. There are many graves of children and adults from 1881. The Skeel family lost 4 children in just a couple of months. Some epidemic must have taken so many people.
Some of the family plots are especially interesting. The Remington's, Winchester's, and Browning's are all well represented. I can't help but wonder if any of them were related to the folks that built the gun empires.
The oldest headstones/graves are: Hannah Smalley Harshman 1810-1833, Stella Lucas 1857, The Wife of John Dickson 1790-1869, Luther Blodgett 1776-1860, Archie Dickson 1860, 2 Chapel Children and dad 1860's, Marion Skeel 1857-1861, Delia Bumrill 1857, Azro Bumrill 1860, Alice Tubbs 1862, Tommy Blair 1862, Thomas Lucas 1863, and many other early graves. Other interesting stones: Margaret Remington 1793-1882, Betsy Lucas 1884 and many other Lucas family stones.
There are veterans buried here from the Spanish American War, Civil War, WWI, WWII and the more recent wars. James Brackett served in the Spanish American war. Edwin Skinner's headstone tells you that he died near Vicksburg in 1863. William Wintcher's headstones tells you he was killed in battle in 1864.
The Knott family has many plots and I especially liked the saying on Sarah Knott Bailey's headstone: She hath done what she could. Sarah lived from 1802-1890. I'd love to read about her 88 years on earth!
Cache is small enough to hide in a cemetery, yet large enough for a micro geocoin.
