Geocache Description:

The game of Bocce is related to bowls and pétanque, where the object is to place colored balls as close to a target as possible by rolling or throwing the balls down a court. Forms of bocce can be traced back as early as 5200 B.C. where illustrations of figures tossing polished stones were recorded in ancient Egyptian artifacts. Bocce was discovered by the ancient Greeks, and then popularized throughout the Roman Empire. The Roman influence in bocce is preserved in the game’s name; bocce derives from the Vulgate Latin bottia, meaning “boss.” Beginning with Emperor Augustus, bocce became the sport of statesman and rulers. From the early Greek physician Ipocrates to the great Italian Renaissance man Galileo, the early participants of bocce have noted that the game’s athleticism and spirit of competition rejuvenates the body.

In modern times, the first bocce clubs were organized in Italy. Notably the first Italian League was formed in 1947 by fifteen teams in and around the town of Torino. 1947 also marks the beginning of the yearly Bocce World Championships. Italian immigrants brought bocce to the United States. During its beginnings in the U.S. there were as many versions of the game as there were towns the immigrants had left. Bringing some order to the game is the Collegium Cosmicum ad Buxeas, the preeminent bocce organization headquartered in Rome, Italy.

Playing Bocce

Bocce can be contested between two players, or two teams of two or four. A match is started by a randomly chosen side being given the opportunity to throw a smaller ball, called a pallino, from one end of the court into a zone near the other end of the court. If they miss twice, the other team is awarded the opportunity to place the pallino anywhere they choose within the zone.

Red gets 2 points
The side that places the pallino is given the opportunity to bowl the first bocce ball. Once the first bowl has taken place, the other side has the opportunity to bowl. From then on, the side which does not have the ball closest to the pallino has a chance to bowl, up until one side or the other has used their four balls. At that point, the other side bowls its remaining bocce balls. Like lawn bowls, the team with the closest ball or balls to the pallino is awarded one point for each ball that is closer to the pallino than the other side's closest ball. The contest continues until one team scores 13 points.

It is common practice that the word "Bocce!" is yelled by all players whenever the ball comes in contact with the pallino. No extra points are awarded for this, but it makes the event livelier for players and spectators alike.

The coordinates listed above are not the correct location for this cache. This is correct:

N 38 AB.CDE
W 121 FG.HFG

Answering the following questions will provide you with the correct coordinates:

AB – The number of feet from A to D.
C – The number of balls outside our circle.
DE – If you paid for an official rule book from the Collegium with Ben Franklin, this is what you’d have left over.
FG – The year prior to the forming of the first Itallian bocce league.
H – The total # of balls in a regulation bocce set.

We must tip our cappelli to Binky del Mar for collaborating with us on this cache. Like many other worthy endeavors, sometimes it takes a villaggio.
