Geocache Description:

A cache on the bank of the River Ribble

The cache is on the south bank of the River Ribble between the entrance to the Dock and the new Ribble Link extension of the north branch of the Lancaster Canal.

Britain's newest inland waterway, the four-mile Millennium Ribble Link connects the once-isolated Lancaster Canal with the main navigable system via a canalisation of the tidal Savick Brook. Opened in 2002 the Link is tidal, which governs its operating times. It contains nine locks (seven canal, one river and one sea lock). The Rufford Branch of the Leeds & Liverpool canal also connects to the River Ribble.

Preston Dock was opened on Saturday 25th June 1892 by Prince Albert, Duke of Edinburgh. The Basin, at 3000 feet long by 600 feet wide was the largest single dock in Europe, a tribute to the Victorian age and enterprise. Freighters could be seen passing the cache location on the tide up to the late seventies. The port finally closed in 1981.

This cache provides a clue to the Light at the End of the Tunnel cache.
