This challenging cache near Zortman, MT will take you to the top of the Little Rockies Mountain Range and to the pinnacle of Old Scraggy Mountain. The trek will take you from around 4,000 ft to 5,700 in just a few miles. While the cache itself is easy to find, the trip there is the fun part. 4WD is not necessary, but good tires and decent ground clearance are a must. The hike is steep with no trails, but only involves pine trees to navigate through.
The trickiest part is the drive to the base of the mountain, so if you're not familiar with the area be sure to grab a map at the store in town, ask the locals, or be ready for extra adventure. To get there, take the gravel road to Camp Creek just outside of town. Near the camp information kiosk, take the road that veers left which will head to the base of Old Scraggy. You can stop and hike any time, but there is a steep dirt 2-track road that heads towards Scraggy as you near the base that has a flat area to park and start your hike. No trails here so just head to the top and enjoy the beautiful view.
