Colt Farm was the creation of Colonel Samuel P. Colt, a consolidation of three farms with a system of roads that linked them together.
Prize Jersey cows were bred at this farm. Two large bronze bulls over 6 ft. high and weighing over a ton were erected at the entrance of the driveway. The one on the right is one of Colt’s favorites, a Grand Champion. The bull on the left, also from prize stock, was added to sire future champions. But because this second bull killed a farm worker, it was ordered to be shot and was buried behind the stone barn.
Throughout the park are bronze statues of horses, deer, Greek gods and goddesses, a stone bridge which spans the Mill Gut, a large summer house named the Casino, guest houses, a stone barn and farmhouse.
Colt’s intentions from the beginning were to always have this farm open to the public. The park is open year round with playfields, picnic groves, a boat ramp, walking and jogging trails, bicycle and bridle trails.
THIS IS NOT A DIFFICULT WALK IF YOU BEGIN ON THE WIDE TRAIL, THEN FOLLOW A COUPLE OF PATHS.
