Ever wonder why this block is so big?
This large area containing four city blocks was originally the North West Mounted Police Barracks going back to 1885. The location of the cache is approximately where the Lethbridge barrack's only hanging took place.
On a night in May 1910 Wasyl Chobator lay in wait for Alex Lazaruk as he came home from working in the No. 6 coal mine. Lazaruk was shot 3 times but lived long enough to identify his assailant.. The motive was his infatuation for Lazaruk's wife and Chobator did not deny the dirty deed.
He was hanged in one of the barns on January 14, 1911. A seven foot pit was dug below the gallows so there would be an adequate distance for the drop. Then the body was covered with quicklime. Later that year the provincial jail east of the city opened and took over the job. As a result the city itself can lay claim to only one execution.
