A Story they could not tell. The object of the River Huntspill was to drain the low-lying farmland south of the River Brue between Gold Corner and Glastonbury.Plans for it had been shelved to to lack of funds. However in the early years of World War Two the Ministry of Works told the Somerset River Catchments Board that a munitions factory was to be built in the area (now ROF Puriton where R.D.X was manufactured for use by Dambusters to bomb Ruhr Dam)and would need 9 million gallons of water per day. Eventually 3.5 million gallons were settled on.
The goverment paid for a new river to be cut, so they got their reservoir and the farmers had their land drained. It took 3 years to complete from January 1940.Therefore the story could not be told at the time but had to remain a secret until the war was over.
