Another in my series of Anson County history.

Lone Pine United Methodist Church is the oldest deeded
Methodist Church in North Carolina. Thomas Tarleton deeded
the property to the congregation in 1791. The deed implies
that it was already a functioning church as does a log of
the preachers and presiding elders that the church possessed
in the 1930s. The list spans from 1785 through 1870 when Long Pine was changed from S.C. Conference where it had been to a different circuit from the rest of the county during the 19th century. It continued through the 1930s.
The old church of logs saw Bishop Ashbury preach in 1801. The early church was serviced by circuit riders: An older
experienced preacher (the elder) and the younger man (the
deacon). It doubled as a school for the youngsters of the
community and the preachers served as teachers at the post Civil War Long Pine Academy near the Frank Leonard Place.
Today, Long Pine is part of the New Hope-Bethel Charge. An
early article about the historic church ends "It is our
ardent prayer that God will help us go forward and that he
will bless our work here and that this dear old church be
long remembered as the cradle of Methodism in Anson County".
We still express this view.

Please show this area the respect it deserves. thanks.
