This cache is near a cave located on Kenelty Mountain which is
approximately 28 miles south of Libby. You will not need to enter
the cave to get this cache.
This cave is one of at least three caves that are on Kenelty
Mountain. The opening to the cave is not very big and you will need
to bend over to get in. Once inside the cave is large enough to
stand up in and walk around. The main room also has an another
opening that goes off to another large room. You will need to slide
on your stomach to get through this opening into the other room.
Once inside the room is large enough to stand up in there too. From
inside the room I saw a homemade ladder that was going up to
another small opening, but I didn't want to try the ladder out. I
didn’t see any bats in the cave, but I have spoken with other
people that have.
To get to this cache, drive on US highway #2 towards Kalispell
approximately 28 miles to a dirt road at coordinates N48 01.987,
W115 19.204. The total distance down the dirt road from this point
to the trail-head is 3.7 miles. There are a couple of junctions
along the route so use the reference points below to determine the
correct direction through the junction.
The hike to the cache is approximately one mile in distance one
way, with an 800 foot elevation gain. The cache is not in the cave
and you will not need to go inside...but you should! The cache
container is a small ammo box that contains trading items, log book
and pencils. Be sure to take your flashlight with you so that you
can check out the cave after you find the cache.
Once you are done at this cache be sure to head on to the
Kenelty Mountain Cave #2 cache where the caves are even
bigger.
