Geocache Description:

A nice hike up the hill past Cranmore tower to take in views of Somerset. This cache needs to be done before you attempt “Towers and Tors of Somerset” cache GCXHPX but you can do this one on its own too.

This simple one stage multi-cache is a 1.5 mile round trip hike up the hill and passes by Cranmore Tower which is privately owned. It looks like it is now open for visits on weekends and Holidays.

Cranmore Tower was built in 1863 and is the best known folly in Somerset and was built by Sir Paget as part of a wager to see which of the rich lords in the area could build the tallest Tower. It is 120ft tall and from the top on a clear day seven counties can be viewed.

You can park at N51 12.662 W2 28.159 and head up the hill. The owners of the land ask that you stay on the bridleway or path as there may be archery in progress nearby and you want to stay clear of that!
(New starting coords are 500ft to the East of old ones)
At the posted coordinates you will find a sign.
Find the enquiries phone number (in the form: Marlborough ABCDEF )

The final cache is at coordinates: N51 12.BB(B+C) W2 27.8A(D+1)

Go up the path/road past Cranmore tower itself and turn onto the Public footpath at the end of the road. If you go on a weekend or Holiday the tower is open to the public and you can go up it for a small charge but the view is worth it.

As you approach the final cache you will come out of the woods and get a great view of this part of Somerset including Alfred’s Tower (145 degrees) which you will need to climb later if you do the “Towers and Tors” cache later.

At last you find the cache! Well done. Be sure and look for the clue that you need to copy down for “Towers and Tors”.
