DKI Does Blueberry Ridge Traditional Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
This cache is located about a 3/4 mile easy, level walk in from the Ferncroft Trailhead parking lot maintained by the Wonalancet Out Door Club (WODC). The cache is located near the junction of the Dicey's Mill Trail and the Blueberry Ledge Cutoff Trail. Since the parking area is maintained by the WODC, there is no parking fee or any need for a National Forest parking permit. This hike is ideal for everyone, including families with young children.
Maintenance update: Cache container and contents both replaced, October, 2015. Enjoy!!
DKI stands for the initials of the children of Rivendell and one of their friends who accompanied us on the hike to place the cache - Diana, Kelsey and Ian. They had a blast finding the hiding place and playing in/exploring the mountain stream afterwards!
From the parking area, located down the dirt road at the sharp bend in Route 113A in Wonalancet (a picturesque village of Tamworth), walk back out to the road and take a right. You will walk past idyllic houses with spectacular backdrops of mountains, forests, rivers and fields. (Please respect the quiet atmosphere, and the private properties, to acknowledge your appreciation of these property owners for allowing these trails to go right through their front yards). Pass Squirrel Bridge road on your left and continue past a gate in the road (posted with a small "Hikers Welcome" sign) into a field and up towards a house and barn. The Dicey's Mill Trail will continue to the left of the barn and the cache will be a short walk ahead near the junction of the Dicey's Mill Trail and the Blueberry Ledge Cutoff Trail. If you're curious, the Blueberry Ledge Cutoff Trail will take you across a stream, by bounding over several strategically placed boulders, or a newly built footbridge,to meet up with the Blueberry Ledge Trail on the opposite bank.
FYI, the Blueberry Ledge Trail will take you to Whiteface and Passaconaway, while the Dicey's Mill Trail will bring you into "The Bowl" an aptly named glacial cirque that is almost entirely encircled by mountains. This is the heart of the Sandwich Range Wilderness portion of the White Mountain National Forest.
When you return to your vehicle in the parking lot, you may want to try the "End Of Summer" cache located very nearby.
