Lockwood's Lock Box Traditional Cache
Rexrider98: After 14 years it's time for this one to be archived. Glad so many people - especially families with kids - have enjoyed this one over the years. Located in Lockwood Forest, a Boxford Conservation Commission property. Most direct route to the cache is about 0.4 miles in, with some gentle ups and downs and mostly on well-marked trails. There are lots of nice trails in this conservation property, and one could do a nice loop to get to the cache. Consult the trail map just inside the woods from the trailhead. This would be a good cache to do with kids.
The recommended trailhead into Lockwood Forest is across the street from the main trailhead and parking area for Boxford State Forest on Middleton Road, at N42/38.413 W70/59.466. Almost everybody who parks there goes into Boxford State Forest; very few go across the street into Lockwood Forest so you may have those woods to yourself. That is, unless you happen to go during the annual BTA/BOLT Dressage and Horse Show or the ABC Benefit Horse Trials, both of which are held on this property (for 2009: BTA/BOLT Horse Show is 7/18/09; ABC Benefit Horse Trials is 9/13/09; see www.btabolt.org/equesNews.html). Do not attempt this cache during either of these events! The rest of the year, you can be impressed by the courage (or insanity!) of the riders who race their horses around these tortuous woodland trails, leaping over the many jumps and obstacles which you'll see.
The cache is an ammo box. Once you find it, you may wish to go a hundred yards further to check out Fish Brook, with its beaver pond and swamp area. It's beautiful and wild there. If you're lucky, you may see one of the cranes that call this pretty swamp area home.
