The Rendlesham UFO Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Aerodyme: With great reluctance I have to archive the geocache at this excellent location. I had a lot of fun setting this one and keeping going at the time, but personal commitments have forced me to take time away from geocaching. The disappearance of the cache soon after I reset it also hasn't helped. So I apologise to the owners who lost their trackable bugs with the cache, I lost one of my own.

May those aliens continue their long mysterious existence in these woods! :)

Geocache Description:

About Rendlesham Forest

Developed in the 1920s by the Forestry Commission, Rendlesham Forest still remains as a working forest with a variety of pines and firs for timber production. In October 1987, about about two thirds of the trees were brought down by the "Great Storm" (remember Michael Fish?). Since then, the forest has been replanted to include conifers and a variety of different habitats.

The Incident

The forest is the location of one of Britain's most significant UFO incidents. Soon after Christmas in 1980, military personnel reported seeing a conical flying object with coloured lights moving in the area during the night. In the days that followed, broken tree tops and holes in a triangular formation were found in the ground. The incident was well documented, and even includes an audio recording made on the night of the sighting! (Audio file linked from www.crowdedskies.com)

About the Cache

The Rendlesham UFO (Unknown Fortunes Obscured) is a multistage cache and involves a five mile circular journey through compacted gravel, dirt and some bridleway tracks over slight gradients. Although it is perfectly possible to do this hunt by foot, fat-tyred bikes are recommended. A gentle trial cycle over the entire course was completed in an hour.
Start at the car park near the end of the disused Woodbridge Airfield at:

Parking/Starting point: N52 5.429 E01 26.094

The given co-ordinates are for the first of three micros that you need to find. These micros are hidden near specific objects around the forest. Each contains parts, when combined, form the co-ordinates for the final cache. Simply fill in the spaces as you find each micro.

The cache is a metal box and its original contents were:

  • TRACKABLES: White Jeep TB, The Bin Bug TB (starting its journey), 2006 Compass Rose Geocoin
  • SWAPS: An unactivated TB, Mini pocket radio, LED keyring light, Glasses repair kit, Magic trick, Water pistol, Deck of playing cards, Emergency poncho, Glowsticks, Gel pen, Pen on retractable cable, Mini clipboard & pencil, Mr Incredible toy, Tennis ball.

Note

  • Rendlesham forest is a working forest and there may be temporary diversions in place during periods of felling operations that may lengthen the trek. Make sure you have plenty of time to complete the hunt!
  • All micros are situated next to the bridleway/cyclepath/footpath. Apart from the main cache, which is about 100ft off the main path, there is no need to wander about the undergrowth or depths of the forest.
  • Carefully rehide all micros and cache back into their original positions.
  • Keep at least one trackable in the cache to make it worthwhile for the next finder, and please log all items that are taken or left behind.
  • Try to avoid putting spoilers in the logs so everyone can enjoy :)
  • The Members Only status for the cache will be lifted on 20th October 06.

*** Update - 22nd Aug 09***

Cache re-enabled after a long period out of action. Lost micros have been rehidden in better nearby spots and a permanent alien geocoin has been added to the main cache as an extra incentive for finders.
The difficulty has been raised because the main cache is hidden more effectively to avoid finders replacing it in the wrong location and causing it to "travel". However fallen leaves could make searches harder so I'll see how well this works before deciding if anything needs to be changed.
Good luck!

*** Update - 20th Oct 2006 ***

As planned, the Members Only status was lifted to make the cache available to everyone. New swaps and trackables have also been added.
Well done to all the intrepid UFO hunters who have found this to date, especially those who were tough enough to walk the entire course!
