Burns' Walk Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

hmp: Sadly when I went to maintain Burns' Walk last week, all that was left was the plastic bag on the ground nearby. This cache has existed for eleven years and has had an adventurous history having twice been replaced. In 2012 the tree where it was hidden amongst the roots was completely chopped down and then in 2015 the surrounding area was bulldozed for a flood defence which meant moving it some distance away from the original ground zero. As I have now moved away, the time has sadly come to archive Burns' Walk.

Geocache Description:

A half mile round trip walk on the banks of the River Nith on a stony but mostly level path. The route passes through trees and also offers views of surrounding countryside.

Here is your chance to walk in the footsteps of famous Scottish poet and songwriter Robert Burns.

Burns spent his last years in the bustling streets of Dumfries in the late 18th Century. If you have time, find out more about the poet and local history by visiting the Robert Burns Centre in Dumfries, or have a drink or meal in the famous Globe Inn, the tavern frequented by Burns. Here he entertained the company with his wit and insight into human lives, his songs and verse. The tourist information centre at Whitesands is also excellent.

At N55°04.727 W003°36.544 there is a sign marked "Burns' Walk Dalscone". It should be possible to park on the road nearby. The cache is about half a mile round trip along the signposted river path. Apart from the final few metres, the path is suitable for buggies.

Near the cache, you can take the steps up to find out more about 2 other famous Dumfries people & have wonderful views of the river. if you continue walking along the river path you will be able to look across the river to the ruins of Lincluden church. In summer months there are masses of wild flowers along the path, and river life such as swans and herons.
