Geocache Description:

This is the third of my Peak District National Park mermaid caches.

Unlike the first two mermaid caches this is a only a short distance from the road. It is, however, surrounded by long, wet grass and wellies will be a good idea after rain (that is, most of the time up here). The area is worth visiting for the views across to The Roaches and Ramshaw Rocks and for the nearby Mermaid Inn. It is also the site of one of the "poetry benches" set up around the National Park to mark the 50th anniversary of the Ranger Service.

Blake Mere is the home of a beautiful mermaid who appears at midnight and lures passers by to a watery grave.

The pool is haunted by the spirit of a young woman who was persecuted by one Joshua Linnet who had her apprehended, trussed up and cast into the bottomless pool. Three days later Linnet was found dead, drowned in the pool, his face torn as if by talons.

No bird or animal will drink at the pool which has never been seen to freeze over in the harshest winter or change its level during the most scorching of summer droughts.

There is a parking place very close to the cache site at the road junction.
