Geocache Description:

At Messerschmidt Pond Wildlife Management Area on Rt. 145 in Westbrook. Good parking at N41 20.420, W 072 29.585, look for the state sign. Messerschmidt Pond is a beautiful 82-acre scenic fresh water pond with little development around it. Besides paddling, fishing is a popular activity here, both summer and winter. Large mouth bass, chain pickerel, sunfish, brown bullhead, yellow perch, and American eel are species listed on the DEP website. Use of motors, except electric, are prohibited.

In the spirit of Wing-it’s series of launch caches, I offer one of my favorites. However, you must bring your kayak or canoe for this one because the cache is not at the launch site. After putting in, paddle to N41 20.467, W072 29.290 for an easy place to take out. There are good trails here and the cache, a small tupperware-like container, is only a few yards off an animal trail. People use this area to picnic and camp, and it took two trips to carry out all the old rusty cans, bottles, etc. that had accumulated. Please make this a CITO and pick up anything I might have missed to keep this special area beautiful. While out here, take a few minutes to follow the small network of trails and explore. If you’re in the mood for a dip, there is a small beach in the SE corner of the pond, at coordinates N 41 20.295 W 072 29.103. Enjoy your trip!
