Bird City Bank Robbery The Security State Bank in Bird City was robbed on June 29, 1931, by Chester Morris and Elza (J.G.) Harmon. The night before the robbery, one of the men entered the building. In the morning, as the officers and employees entered, they were forced to the back room and tied hand and foot. When the time lock on the vault allowed it to be opened, Edgar Robertson (Assistant Cashier) was made to open it. A little over $700.00 was scooped up, and the employees were locked in the vault. The Postmaster came into the bank shortly after the robber left, and heard the calls of the imprisoned people. They were freed about ten minutes after the bandits left. A car with Sherman county license plates was seen parked near the bank and had seemed suspicious. This car was reported stolen the night before. The boys had been working for farmers near Bird City, and were found after the car used in the robbery was located where another had been parked along a country road, also arousing suspicion. Nearly all the money taken was found in a field in the northeast part of the county. It had been placed under an old dishpan and pushed down into the ground as far as possible. The bandits confessed and were sentenced to the penitentiary at Lansing and began serving time nine days after the robbery.
