Wolfpack Gridiron Heros Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

ncflyfisher: I have decided to pull the plug on this one for the time being since the length of time it will be down going forward due to construction is at least several more months. It may be back in modified form at some point in the future as a new cache.

Geocache Description:

This is a two step puzzle cache (or one step if you are a "RED" blooded NCSU football fan and can work this one out from memory). The final cache is a small (7.62mm) ammo container located within about 0.5 miles from the coordinates listed above. Good parking is located near the final location so once you get the final coordinates driving to that location will save you a one mile roundtrip hike back to your car.

This cache is placed in honor of those North Carolina State University football players who have had their jersey numbers retired. The coordinates given above will place you on the field of Carter-Finley Stadium where if you were to look to the west stands you would be able to see the “Ring of Honor” where these players names and jersey numbers are listed. You probably won’t be able to get to these specific coordinates but there is hope to find all the information you need, as follows:

1) You can visit the NCSU football display in the Murphy Football Center lobby during normal weekday business hours and find all the information you seek (entrance is near the “WOLFPACK” virtual cache – GCGDD1 – at N 35° 47.962 W 078° 43.089); or

2) You can visit the Dail Plaza located between the North End Zone (near the main scoreboard) and the RBC Center for an outside display which is available 24/7. Coordinates for parking in this area are at N 35° 48.116 W 078° 43.254).

3) Internet search -- and this won't be as easy as you might think as a previous finder noted in their log; but you will learn more than you wanted to know (probably) about NCSU football. Why you would want to do this when you can drive by the location for Method #2 (most of the time and if you have good eyes you will not even have to get out of the car) while you are driving to the final cache location, beats me!

Currently there have been a total of eight players who have been honored with their jersey numbers retired. Out of the eight players seven of the players have played on offense and have had the responsibility for moving the ball on the field in a “North-South” direction. Only one of the players has been a defensive standout responsible for making sure the offense spends more time moving “East-West”. To find the final coordinates for this cache you will need to accomplish the following:

1. Identify the eight players who have been honored – specifically their jersey numbers

2. Determine which seven (7) players are offensive unit honorees.

3. Determine which one (1) player is the lone defensive honoree.

To find the NORTH coordinate you will need to sum (yes that means you must be able to ADD a string of two digit numbers) all the numbers for the “Offensive Unit” honorees to get the key to the adjustment to the North Coordinate. You will need to calculate “XXX” as SUM (Offensive Unit Honoree Jersey Numbers)

To find the WEST coordinate you will only need to identify the jersey number of the one player who was the defensive honoree. This jersey number will be “YY”.

The cache is located at

N 35° 48.AAA
W 078° 42.BBB

Where AAA = (424 – XXX) and BBB = (536 + YY)

The coordinates for the final location are based on a 400 count average on a GARMIN GPSMAP 60C with an estimated accuracy of +/- 23.2 feet – but you are looking for an ammo can hidden in the woods so how close do you really need to be….

FTF Honors -- Appropriately to the WUFFPACK Team!
