Geocache Description:

In 1066, Tain was given it's Royal Charter - granted by King Malcolm III. This makes it the oldest Scottish Royal burgh. It confirmed Tain both as a sanctuary, where people could claim the protection of the church, and an "immunity", whose resident merchants and traders were exempt from certain types of taxes. These important ideas carried through the centuries and led to the development of the town as it is today.
The Plaids of Tain were lands owned in former times by the McCullochs - L's ancestors.
In 1512, King James IV "granted to William McCulloch of Pladdis [Plaids], the lands of....with the office of Bailie of the Immunity of Tane,..."
The family had great influence in Tain, such as the Provost of Tain in 1660, the senior Bailie, the Dean of Guild etc.
They were Barons of the Plaids - once a considerable estate - and they were hereditary keepers of the four Girth Crosses of St.Duthus.
The Girth crosses were boundary markers defining the area of the sanctuary. The holy Girth of Saint Duthus was nearly as large as the Tain parish.
In 1306, King Robert the Bruce was forced to flee Rathlin island. His Queen and his daughter Marjorie took refuge at Kildrummie Castle in Aberdeenshire. Fearing an attack by the force of the english King Edward, they came to Tain with ladies of the court, squires and knights. Looking for security within The Girth, unhappily they found that William Earl of Ross was at the time an english supporter and he swept into Tain with an armed band and captured the Queen and Princess. He surrendered them to Edward of England. The following year, the earl had become reconciled with Bruce; the Princess Maud being married to the earl's son.
He later led the men of Ross, Sutherland and Caithness at Bannockburn - a rare occasion where northern clans were united instead of fighting each other.

The cache is an easy walk across the River Tain to Plaids.
