Geocache Description:

A two-stage multicache at Bellingham's Memorial Park, at the corner of E. Maryland St. and King St.

Memorial Park was founded by the World War Veteran's Mothers Club to honor the "boys of Whatcom County" who died in the World War (WWI). The unusual name for this cache, "San Fairy Ann", is a bit of WWI soldier's slang, from the French phrase "ça ne fait rien" (it does not matter). When British and American soldiers arrived in Europe to fight in the First World War, they struggled to wrap their mouths around unfamiliar French words. They picked up a lot of French expressions, but often changed them into something that sounded more like English. I'm sure the Belgians were horrified, for instance, to hear Tommies and doughboys pronounce "Ypres" as "Wipers".

"San Fairy Ann" became a catchphrase in that war, as an expression of resigned —or cynical— acceptance of some state of affairs, usually brought about by bungling officers. It's meaning in practical use was something along the lines of "We're stuck with it - oh, well."

The initial coordinates will take you to a large arch with two bronze plaques. To find the latitude for the second stage, count the total number of names on *both* plaques and divide by 11, convert this to a decimal (X =.00X) and add the result to the initial latitude coordinates:
N48º 46.010 +.00X = N48º 46.01?

To find the longitude for the second stage, count the total number of wooden benches in the park, and multiply by 4. Convert the result to a decimal (XX = .0XX) and subtract the result from the initial longitude coordinates:
W122º 27.798 - .0XX = W122º 27.7??

Cache container is a small tupperware container. Please re-hide carefully.
