Geocache Description:

This cache placement is dedicated to the Town & Gown cooperation in which Stanford built this impressive athletic facility on their land and leased it to the City of Palo Alto for $1 per year for 50 years in exchange for the City permitting the University to expand their educational and research facilities.

This is a three-stage cache that may easily be done on foot. The given coordinates locate you in the parking lot for the new soccer field facility on the corner of El Camino Real and Page Mill Road in Palo Alto. (You should be at the plaque closest to Page Mill Rd)

Facing the fields are six (6) plaques describing some of the history of this area. From information gathered on these signs, you will determine the coordinates for the second stage. At that stage, you will gather additional information required to find the final cache location.

The cache is a magnetic key container. Bring your own pencil/pen to sign the log. There is a Sacajawea dollar in the container for the First to Find!

*** Determine A & B for the coordinates of STAGE 2 at N 37 deg 25.A; W 122 deg 08.B

A = a1 minus a2 plus a3 (Checksum = 15) where

a1 - Numerical address where the two entrepreneuers rented their shop space.

a2 - The number of years from the start of construction to the demolition of "Mayfield's finest public building"

a3 - The last digit of the year the Mayfield town site was plotted.

B = b1 minus (6 times b2) plus b3 (Checksum = 20) where

b1 - Numerical address of the first tenant of the Stanford Research Park

b2 - The sum of the digits in the year Leland Stanford arranged to have University Park named Palo Alto

b3 - The last digit in the year Jesus Ramos farmed land across Page Mill Road.

These coordinates will take you to the vicinity of 440 Page Mill Road; the site of the L. P. Institute of Science and Medicine until about 15 years ago. You will, however, need to have the exact values for A & B to determine the final cache location.

*** Determine C & D from the work of art along this wall for the coordinates of STAGE 3, the cache location:

N 37 deg 25.C; W 122 deg 08.D

C = A - X - 4 (Checksum = 10)

X - The number of letters in the first six words of the four-line protest sign shown on one of the ceramic tiles.

D = B + 2(Y + 3) (Checksum = 17)
Y - The number of words in the quote (shown on two tiles) by the man to whom this mural is dedicated. (Caution! One word looks like two words.)
