The Prop of Ythsie is at the highest point of the Haddo Estate near Tarves, but cannot be accessed from Haddo House grounds (where Haddo's Hoard multi-cache can be found!). It is a square tower built in 1861 as a memorial to the 4th Earl of Aberdeen, George Hamilton Gordon, who was Prime Minister during the Crimean War. He had been a popular landlord and the 'prop' was built as a tribute from his tenants.
There is a signposted route to the tower from the carpark. Terrain is not really suitable for buggies. The tower is open to walk up. It has 93 steps, giving wonderful views from the top. Thanks to Jim Stevenson, the geocaching contact at Aberdeenshire Council, for permission to set this cache. The cache is not hidden anywhere on the tower itself. Please rehide well. PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE BUSINESS CARDS IN CACHES. If any are found please remove and destroy...thank you :)
