Geocache Description:

The cache is located in the middle of an airport runway. The airport called Gilbert Auxiliary Army Airfield #1 was a one of four satelite airports for Williams Field built in the 1940s but long gone by now. Cache is easy to find; you can practically drive right up to it. Take time to notice the NE/SW oriented runway while you are here...some of the runway is actually still visible! Cross Hampton and the runway is even more evident! GoogleMap the area and you get a birds eye view.

The field was built in the 1940s but little is known about the airfield. It was used by Williams Air Force Base to help train Fighter and Bomber pilots during WW2. I think its really neat to see bits and pieces of the area's past still "preserved" like this. I wonder how long before development completly obliterates this bit of history.

Congrats to the sidekicks on the F2F!
