Geocache Description:

Welcome to Shellharbour Village. This cache is an easy walk around the old Shellharbour village which will fill your brain with interesting and maybe useless info about the joint. Enjoy!

Welcome to Shellharbour, so named because of the shell-like natural feature of the local landscape, and formally known as Peterborough, was one of the earliest land grants received by D’Arcy Wentworth.
After his death in 1827 the estate was divided between the 5 of his children – Robert, Martha (Reddall), Sophia (towns), Mary Anne (Addison) and Catherine (Darley).
The streets of Shellharbour were named after these families. In 1843 Caroline Chisholm, the “emigrants friend”” settled some 23 families in the district. Many of these pioneers were signatories to a petition to form the municipality of Shellharbour dated 14th January 1859.
The Co-ords for the car park across the road from the pub are S 34 34.674 E 150 52.213, which is the best place to start this trip back in time. This car park does get locked up after hours but the cache and way points are all available 24 hours a day, you just may have to park else where. Once you have all of the dates needed there is a quick bit of maths and then off to GZ where the Cache awaits. When you’re all done be sure to drop into the Pub for a cool ale or have a bite to eat at one of the many food outlets along your walk.
