This cache is located at the top of Mine Hill in the eastern part of Kelowna, BC. It will give you spectacular views of the Central Okanagan valley. The terrain and climb are easy and is suitable for younger children. At a kid's walking pace, it should take about 30 minutes to get to the top. Please read the following description. If you choose not to follow the trails, the difficulty level will increase due to the steepness of the climb and terrain.
There are now 3 main access points to the top of this hill. The one we used to use often has been made more difficult to get to because of recent development in that area. Our suggestion is to drive up the Toovey Rd area and park at N 49 52.867 W 119 21.822. A postal box is nearby. Look north towards some power lines and you should see a trail that heads north for just a short distance then will curve up the hill. The trail passes a cache that we recently disabled due to construction in the area called "Mining for Treasure" which was suitable for young children that we hope to get active again soon. The trail continues upward and meets a dirt road. You can follow the dirt road all the way to the top or watch for several trails on your right that will also take you to the top that provide a more intimate hike. There used to be a radio tower at the top but was dismantled and is now just a large patch of gravel. Once at the top, enjoy the views, get a good reading on the gps and go searching. You are looking for a green ammo box. My daughter, when she was 6 years old, helped make this cache up and she wanted red coloured items or Canada theme items. There are other caches in the area. You can make the trip into a full circle and complete the journey in under an hour and a half. Another route is drive farther up Lone Pine Dr to Deans Dr or even higher now up Lone Pine Dr now that the construction is complete. You can also access the cache from the east side by going up Loseth Rd and finding a parking spot near the coordinates. New roads like Carnoustie Dr and Melrose St make reaching the top a little easier. If you attempt the climb from Mine Hill Dr or Bramble Crt, the climb is steeper. We love to do this hike any time of year. In the winter, bring your snowshoes for an enjoyable winter activity.
