Ombra di parole silenziose (L’Isola dei Morti)
Firenze – Il monumentale “Cimitero degli Inglesi” è posto in Piazzale Donatello dal 1827. Come cimitero protestante, era posto fuori delle mura cittadine in prossimità della Porta a Pinti, da cui prendeva originariamente il nome. Il cimitero è posto sulla sommità di una montagnola naturale sulla quale la gente, agli inizi del secolo XIX, saliva per assistere al gioco del pallone che si svolgeva nella radura pianeggiante adiacente, oggi sede del viale Matteotti. L'area fu ceduta dal governo granducale nel 1827 alla Chiesa Evangelica Riformata e venne ampliata nel 1860 con una ulteriore cessione di terreno. Il cimitero chiuse i suoi cancelli nel 1877 divenendo il custode della memoria "…di un piccolo popolo e di un Ottocento cosmopolita e non conformista" che ha onorato Firenze. Nel cimitero è sepolta la poetessa Elisabeth Barret Browning (Se devi amarmi, per null’altro sia..), morta a Firenze nel 1861 dove era fuggita col marito Robert Browning nel 1847.Il cimitero è noto anche come "L'Isola dei morti" in quanto la figlioletta di sette mesi di Arnold Boecklin, fu qui sepolta nel 1877; nel quadro “Toteninsel” dipinto da Boecklin nel 1880 c’è un richiamo all’ingresso del cimitero con i suioi cipressi. Oggi è rimasta un’isola nel traffico rumoroso della città, ma all’ombra delle parole di pietra delle sue tombe anche il silenzio prevale.

Silent words shadow (The Island of the Dead)
Florence – The monumental “English Cemetery” is placed in Piazzale Donatello from 1827. Being a Protestant burial site, this cemetery was placed outside the city walls near Porta a Pinti, the gateway after which it was originally named. The cemetery stood on the top of a natural hill where Florentines used to go in the early 19th century to watch ball games being played on the adjoining piece of flat land (present-day Viale Matteotti). In 1827 the area was sold by the grand-ducal government to the Reformed Anglican Church and enlarged in 1860 after the purchase of an additional parcel of land. The cemetery was closed in 1877, and became the memorial site "of a small community in the cosmopolitan, non-conformist 19th century" that honoured Florence with its presence. In the cemetery is buried the poetess Elisabeth Barrett Browning (If thou must love me, let it be for nought..) dead in Florence in 1861 where she escaped with her husband Robert Browning in 1847. The cemetery is remembered also as ‘Island of the Dead’ as the seven-months-old daughter of Arnold Boecklin was buried here in 1877; in the painting “Toteninseln” of 1880 there is a similarity with the entrance of the cemetery with its cypresses. Today it is an island in the noise of the city traffic, but in the shadow of its stone words even the silence prevails.
