Easy. Easy. Easy. Fourteen miles south of Angel Fire, alongside NM-434. Coming from Angel Fire or Ocate, at Junction 434/120 in downtown Black Lake, turn toward Mora. You should immediately see a sign reading "Coyote Creek [Campground] 10, Morphy Lake 30." Park in turnout at N36° 16.451 W105° 14.902.
It is hidden behind Nature's Tombstone in sight of Coyote Creek. Please sign the logbook and trade at will -- though we hope you'll have a trackable item to switch with one of our waiting guests.
This large ammo can is comfortable accomodation for the travel bug that has always wanted to sleep beside the Lonesome Dove Ranch.
We hope you'll trade a tired travel bug for a well-rested travel bug.
Southwest-ish of "the frog" over the hill* is where the film crew built a cabin and corrals to act as the Montana Ranch in the 1989 "Lonesome Dove"** miniseries. After all these years the cabin and corrals were being torn down even as this geocache was placed. But two weeks later an identical cabin had been erected in its place!? Perhaps this one doesn't have a styrofoam fireplace... Another close-by turnout at N36° 16.229 W105° 15.062 is the safest/best place to view the "Lonesome Dove"** location at the edge of the lake. It's prettier than the scenes show: the Sangre de Cristo mountain range rising up almost directly from the west of the lake wasn't in the shots, but instead showed snow-capped Wheeler Peak to the north.
*DO NOT CROSS THE FENCE AT EITHER LOCATION. This particular property owner will likely shoot you.
