A short to moderate mountain walk on the Iveragh Peninsula, Co.
Kerry.
The cache is a clear plactic box hidden beside the Kerry Way
on a mountain gap between the Black Valley and the Bridia Valley.
These valleys are remote, rugged and lonely ice carved glens on the
Iveragh peninsula of County Kerry. The walk from the starting point
to the cache takes about 45 minutes and involves a climb of about
200m. Strong walking boots are recommended.
Directions: The cache is located right between the Black
Valley and the Bridia Valley and can be approached from both sides.
The directions given here are for the Bridia Valley side. This is
the more convenient side when doing both "The Highlands of Kerry"
and this cache. The road into the Bridia Valley branches off the
Sneem-Glencar (Ballaghbeama Gap) road and is signposted - see
picture. There is space for two cars at the provided parking
co-ordinates. There is no other parking space beyond this point!
From the car park follow the road, go through the gate and pass the
house on the left side. Behind the house go through the small gate
and from there, follow the yellow markers for the Kerry Way.
At 215km, the Kerry Way is currently Ireland's longest signposted
walking trail and also one of the most popular. The trail starts
and finishes in the busy tourist destination of Killarney. Looping
around the Iveragh Peninsula, the Kerry Way goes anti-clockwise,
passing through some of the most isolated and dramatic countryside
in the country. A fine example of this is the stretch linking the
Black Valley with the Bridia Valley where the Kerry way passes the
gap between Carrauntoohil to the North and Broaghnabinnia to the
south. The cache is hidden right beside the Kerry Way at a height
of about 300m.
If you like, it is worth to take a look at Curraghmore lake - see
additional waypoint below. Carrauntoohil rises steeply behind
it.
Please hide the cache well as this spot seems to be a favourite
area for "Kerry-Way-Muggels" taking a break or seeking shelter.
