Close to the A1, these
mysterious monoliths are three huge standing stones which form one
of the region's most famous prehistoric monuments.
One legend has it that they are the petrified remnants of the rope
the Devil used to hang his own grandmother!
Scientific evaluation identifies them as early Bronze Age in date
and ceremonial in function.
The stones are of millstone grit and were brought nearly 7 miles
from Knaresborough.
The dramatic looking grooves in the tops of the stones have been
weathered by millenia of rainfall wearing away the relatively soft
sandstone of the Arrows.
Access: Turn off the A1(M)
at the A6055 (Boroughbridge) and head into the town. Turn left
after the Three Arrows Hotel, down Roecliffe Lane. The stones are a
few hundred metres down and near to the A1(M) that now bypasses
Boroughbridge. The tallest is just off the road to the left, behind
a gate. The other two are 200m away on the opposite side of the
road, in a field.
It is possible to get near the stones by walking down the side of
the field, taking care not to trample the crop.
On to the cache.
I have hidden a small klip & lock box near the huge
'arrow'.
There is no need to go over
the fence at the back.
I hope you enjoyed the local
history and good luck with the hunting.
