Snapshot of the Arts Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

panandfoo: Alas, it was not to be.

This was fun to map out and to hide but we've run into some difficulty on the final location so we're opening up the space for other caches.

Geocache Description:

** Daylight Hours Only to the Final, Please!**

Who says urban caches all have to be dumb little micros (and worse)? This hunt is five stops giving you a tour of a sampling of the Arts in Rochester. And the final is a .50Cal... all in an urban setting! The waypoints are within a mile or two of each other - using bikes or a car the entire sequence can easily be done in under 45 minutes. Or stop and enjoy some of the areas and spend several hours. Either way, an excellent whole-family cache!

Note: If you get an answer for any of the letters below that is not a single-digit positive integer, you do not have the correct clue yet.

Stop 1: At the published coords, stand and contemplate a building that was once a firehouse, but now provides outreach and education in several arts for the Rochester area. On this building's facade, you will see two different numbers presented in identical style. Subtract 6 from one of those numbers to get X. The other number is Y. Your next stop is at 43 0X.6YY 077 35.3Y0.

Stop 2: One of several major gathering places for those who wish to partake of the lively arts! Approach the coords from the street level, climbing exactly twelve steps, and stop. Look to the left or right of the doors you are facing. You will see a symbol that provides a hint of this building's original use. That symbol includes a single letter. Let the numerical value of this letter be Q. Let P be Q-1 and R be Q+1. You now need to enter into your GPSr: 43 0X.YR1 077 35.YPP.

Stop 3: Education is the future of any field, not least the Arts. Although a shiny new addition to this institution's building was completed in 1993, the coords have brought you to an indication of the year its original building was constructed. Boil this number down to a single digit by iteratively adding the digits together until only one digit remains. Example: 1957, the year I was born, "boils down" like so: 1+9+5+7=22 and 2+2=4 so the answer is 4. Now boil down the year you found to get A. Subtract P from A to get B. Your next stop is: 43 0A.BBA 077 35.0PR.

Stop 4: You are in the heart of the Neighborhood of the Arts. Take a while to explore the resources within this space of a few blocks. Writing, photography, painting and sculpture are all around you. Have a bite and a cup of coffee or a glass of wine at a cafe themed after the owner's favorite painting (it's one of ours, too!). But first, we have some business to take care of. Where you are standing is an historical marker with a specific year mentioned. Boil down this year to get N. Your final coords are: 43 0A.(N*65) 077 NY.Q5Y

Final: ** Daylight Hours Only to the Final, Please!**
Be careful going to the final, you will pass close by delicate vegetation. Respect the planted beds and mulched areas -- you will have no need to leave the grassy parts of the grounds to find this cache. You'll need yarn. The cache is a .50Cal stuffed with Arts things: paints, music, journals for budding writers. After finding and trading fair*, enjoy your visit. We received gracious permission for this hide to be where it is, so return that favor to the Geocaching community and check out the world-class exhibits and events found here.

* - Please do NOT trade markers, paints or clay into this cache unless they are 100% washable; this is a request of our hosts.

Congrats to Wheelygood on FTF!

We've hidden three caches now and written the above sentence twice... hmmmm!
