Geocache Description:

Just south of Singleton is Whittingham (which the government tried to establish as the official township in the late 1820s). Cemetery Lane runs off to the West. At its end, beyond the level crossing (please shut the gate), is an Anglican cemetery. A plaque set into a boulder marks the site of Joe Governor's grave. This cache is located close to the grave marker - he was the last outlawed Bushranger in NSW.

Primarily a log-only micro, though micro-sized swaps may also fit.

Please BYO pen, crayon or pencil to log cache.

If approaching Singleton from the Putty Road you can also access the site via this waypoint on Army Camp Road: S32 35.386 E151 09.983

Joe Governor and his brother, Jimmy, were greatly feared in the district (well, much of Northern NSW) at the end of the 19th century. Joe was shot and killed at St Clair, North of Singleton, in 1900, his corpse was not permitted within the bounds of the graveyard.

The story of the Governor brothers, Joe and Jimmy, and their mate Jacky Underwood has been told several times, as it is probably one of the most horrific of the bushranger stories. The most 'famous' version is Thomas Keneally's CHANT OF JIMMY BLACKSMITH, which was made into a film. Unfortunately, like most accounts, Keneally got it wrong, seeing it through mid-20th Century eyes as a simple case of white racism, with the victims getting their just desserts.

There is a lot of stuff on the net about the Governor's, so for those who are interested, do a bit of research to learn the whole story. Some links include:

Also well worth a look in Historic Singleton is the Caledonian Hotel located at 40 George Street (New England Highway), Singleton - S32 33.668 E151 10.487. This large brick hotel was built in 1851 by Alexander Munro, Singleton's first Mayor and successful vigneron. It has become renowned for the fact that the body of the Bushranger, Joe Governor, was layed out in this hotel. His inquest was held there.

Also of note here is the Cemetery itself, there are numerous very old graves dating back to the 1800s.

Nearby you will also find one of, if not THE largest solar power farm in the Southern Hemisphere. Not much to look at, but it's there. :)

This cache is also a waypoint for my Mystery Cache: Longview

Please note: This geocache is in a muggle frequented area. Stealth / good timing may be required. The cache is hidden so muggles should not find it, please try not to give away the location or create unwanted attention - people may be watching!
