INDIANA GHOST
TOWN QUEST
The Indiana Ghost Town
Quest series of geocaches will take you to towns of yester-year
that no longer exist or are near extinction. Inspired by the
Indiana Spirit Quest cemetery series, this series will take you to
remnant sites as well as vacant sites where towns once existed,
hopefully exposing a part of our historic past to the
visitor.
These towns were once
important centers of trade but due to various reasons now are gone.
These reasons can include changes in local industry, changes in
trade routes, or even changes in transportation. This can be as
simple as railroads replacing canals and interstates replacing
local highways.

QUEST #1:
"Makin"
This Quest will take you to
the ghost town- Makin, Warren Township, Huntington County, Indiana.
Makin's beginning was a shoemakers shop in 1840. The old Bethesda
United Methodist Church (now a residence) is the sole survivor of
Makin having replaced the original round-log cabin which was moved
and is now part of the house located on the southwest corner of the
Bracken Rd. intersection. One part of the gunpowder team has
relatives that have lived in this house for 3 generations and were
citizens of Makin.
"The seventy-some uniformed
"Rough Riders" horse patrol of the Makin community performed before
Teddy Roosevelt. They rode past the reviewing stand at the court
house as one Unit in the Huntington County political rally. Teddy
was so pleased that he requested they ride by and perform their
drill again. The Rough Riders were teenagers of the Makin
community. They had been organized and drilled by Albert Deemer and
Melvin Sprinkle, both Veterans of the Spanish-American War. Their
drill field was just west of Makin." Reference: Ghost Towns
