Geocache Description:

Along the Seward highway past Bird Point but before Girdwood.

This cache is at a location where you can learn the history of the area. Take some time and read the sign near the cache.

First and foremost this is NOT a WINTER cache. While there has been major changes done to the area recently that lessens the danger, such as relocating the highway and railroad, it still isn’t totally safe in the winter. Think of it as what you would expect if you were climbing a mountain in winter that has avalanches at times. Not really safe and something to avoid.

Here’s a little history from the area.

Avalanches have menaced the highway and railroad since their construction began. You are standing on the old highway, at its deadliest spot. It is not obvious by looking up, but above you is an accumulation zone and high angle slope.

Snow Shed
In 1919, four heavy reinforced wooden sheds were constructed along the base of this hill to combat the frequent closures and rail damage. The tunnel-like sheds were strong enough to withstand avalanches, but to short. Often avalanche debris would flow around the shed plugging its ends.

Tragic Accident
It was while cleaning out avalanche debris at the end of one of the sheds in April of 1920 that another avalanche roared down killing the 6 railroad workers. Nineteen others were injured. Some were blasted into Turnagain Arm by the avalanche’s fury.

I thought this would be an interesting place for a cache because there aren’t many places that talk about what it is like in Alaska in the winter.

To get here you can park across the highway in the nice pull out, and walk the couple hundred feet to it or if you would like to take a nice 2 mile bike ride from Bird Point the bike path goes right by within 20 feet.

This is a small micro cache with only room for the log, so bring a writing instrument.
I hope you enjoy finding this location as much as I did.

The terrain difficulty is high because of possible snow danger in winter, otherwise it’s flat and open.
