Directions:
Take route 202 West toward Keene, exit at the 2nd Hillsborough exit
Rt 202 / 149. Turn right at the bottom of the off ramp then turn
north on Beard Road opposite the Sampan restaurant. The swimming
hole is about a half mile on the left.
Beard Brook Swimming hole:
Until now, (insert evil laughter emoticon here) The Beard Brook
Swimmin’ Hole has been one of the best kept secrets in
Hillsborough. This "dammed" spot on Beard Brook is a wonderful
summer escape back to the past. Relax on the grass, have a swim in
the cool water, or just eat a quiet lunch. It's rarely crowded. On
hot summer days the area is very popular to families with young
children and local fishermen. Picnic tables, BBQ pits and a
port-a-potty is available. No lifeguards are on duty!!
The Cache:
The small cache is a 1.7 cup Lock–N-Lock container containing
various items for trade and is located on the opposite side of the
brook. WADING IS REQUIRED, YOU WILL GET WET. How wet, is
entirely up to you.
Keep in mind, current is normally slow here, but beware of
currents after heavy rains. I have uploaded a photo of the swimmin’
hole after the floods of 2005. I’m sure the water level and current
will be much lower for your attempt. Follow common sense rules of
water safety: never swim alone, don't drink alcohol and ask locals
about obstructions, rocks and other hazards.
Do not attempt to cross the brook upstream. You will be
trespassing on private property.
