Manvers Lake Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Mr Truffles: Visited the site this morning. The micro cache and main cache are still in place and unaffected by the development work taking place around the site therefore the last cacher must have worked out the coords incorrectly. HOWEVER, due to the expanding development of the site I think it is time to lay this one to rest. When the development has been completed I will set a series around the lake if I have resumed cache placement mode. Thanks to all who have visited.

Geocache Description:

This multi cache involves a small puzzle leading to a micro containing the coordinates for the main cache on a 1.7 mile walk around Manvers Lake, Wath. The walk is suitable for children and wheelchair users.

Wath was principally a mining town sitting in the middle of a number of collieries including its own Manvers Main and Wath Main. Alas, the pits have gone and a massive regeneration programme has seen the former colliery sites in the Dearne valley transformed. Now there are many industrial units, call centres, Dearne Valley College and of course the picturesque Manvers Lake, which is a short distance from Old Moor RSPB nature reserve. This is a lovely area and you will want to return. You may wish to take in the Old Moor cache whilst in the area.

There are a number of parking area's for you to start your walk, some of which have been listed as waypoints. My recommended starting point is at the coordinates shown on the main listing of this cache which is a parking area at the bottom of Moor Road, Wath in a cul de sac next to thge bowling greens and cricket field. Turn left off Biscay Way at the side of Wath Swimming baths to lead you to this starting point. Take plenty of bread for the swans, geese, ducks and many other species of bird.

From the bottom of Moor Road(or indeed any of your other chosen parking area's) folow the path and cross the distinctive blue painted bridge over the dual carriageway and walk straight ahead past the old colliery winding shaft wheel to THE CIRCLE. Admire the views over the lake and study the information shown on the 4 notice boards on pillars and around the circle on the floor. The micro cache coordinates can be found as follows:

N53 30.ABC W001 20.DEF

A & B - Find the board relating to Manvers Main Colliery. How many pounds per acre was coal valued at in 1810?

C - Find the board relating to Cortonwood Colliery. In what year was it opened? You require the fourth digit of the 4 digit number.

D, E & F - Find the board relating to the Bay of Biscay Dearne and Dove Canal. The canal was built between 2 years. From the first year take the first digit for E and the third digit for D. From the second year take the third digit for F.

You now have the coordinates for the micro (35mm film container) which only contains the final cache coordinates. You will now proceed back to the main path and walk clockwise around the lake. The paths around the lake are popular and therefore STEALTH may be required to find the micro and main cache. Please ensure both are well hidden as found when you leave.

The first cache box was muggled and had to be replaced and due to some landscaping work close to the second cache location I have moved it again to be safe. There is somewhere to sit and act inconspicuous near to the cache site. The cache box is a 1 litre tupperware style box containing log book, pen, pencil, sharpener, cache card and assorted goodies including a TB. The cache box is covered in cammo tape. PLEASE REHIDE BETTER THAN WHEN FOUND. THIS AREA IS POPULAR WITH MUGGLES.

On your return to the starting point you may wish to visit the arrangement of stones at the head of the lake - Dinsoaur bones?(photo).
