Geocache Description:

This isn't Texas?

No, It's Austin, Manitoba

This cache is located in the town of Austin, Manitoba. Austin is well known for the full size steam engine that sits high atop a strong steel frame at the entrance to the community. Travelers from all over the world have stopped to get a picture of this pioneer mammoth of the plains.

Austin is home to the world famous Manitoba Agricultural Museum. It is located about two miles south of the trans-Canada highway # 1 on highway 34. It is open from May to October with a GIANT four day thresherman’s reunion held during the last week of July every year. Check out their web site for some great steamer pics.

Austin History

The Austin area was first settled in the 1870’s.The McKinnon family lived about 2 miles South of present day Austin. They ran a stopping house, had the first post office at their house and later donated some land near their place for the present Austin cemetery. The settlement was originally called Three Creeks for the three branches of a nearby creek.

The railway pushed through the area in 1881. Some of the buildings from Three Creeks were moved to the rail line and a town sprang up. The town was named after Mr. Sidney Austin, a correspondent from a London newspaper, who was reporting on a western tour being made by the Marquis of Lorne, the Governor General of the day. The nearby town of Sidney was also named on this trip. The Governor General drop a golden spike into the CPR track where the Red River Trail met the railway between Sidney and Austin.

In 1883, Sir Walter Clifford, the 8th Baron of Chudleigh, immigrated to Austin. He was active in the farm and also the business community. One of the main roads in Austin is called Clifford Road.
