Geocache Description:

Downtown Kingston

This is a third cache on the R-T-C series(Rome to Cartersville) route.

Kingston, GA. is said to have more historical markers per capita than any town in the state! The town is named for a railroad financier, John Pendleton King of Augusta, GA.

Before the advent of the railroad, Native Americans thrived in this area. Besides farming and trading, the Cherokee mined saltpeter, an ingredient in gunpowder, and sold it to British and American buyers as late as the War of 1812.

A stagecoach route preceded the railroad thru Kingston. Hotels were built to accomodate passengers and tourists who came to enjoy the nearby springs. When the railroad came thru, Kingston became an important N-S and E-W nexus. A rail yard was built, providing a major employer, along with the booming cotton market and tourist trade which supported four hotels.

With the outbreak of the Civil War, Kingston became a hospital and supply center because of its rail connections.
Ultimately, Kingston fell to Sherman. It was here he made his headquarters and solidified his plan to "march to the sea".

In 1911, Kingston suffered a major fire. Along with the invention of automobiles, and their routes that bypassed Kingston, the town went into a deep slumber.

The cache is located in a park that is home to The Women's History Club Museum. Admission is free (donations accepted). In walking distance are a cafe (southern specialties), an antique store and grocery located within the renovated downtown buildings.
BTW:
Museum is open Sat.1-4, Sun. 1-4, or by appt. The park is open 24/7. Beware that this is a very small town...I have been warned by locals that the Kingston police force don't need much to stop you. So you have been warned! ;)
Spend some time in town. See how many historical markers you can find!!! BYOP.-I forgot to add one. Cache will hold small items and TB's.
You can park right next to cache to hide from view.
Enjoy! ;)
