Turku palaa
Kaikkien aikojen tuhoisin kaupunkipalo Pohjoismaissa alkoi 4.9.1827 klo 9 illalla kauppias Hellmanin pihalta. Kauppias itse oli tuolloin Tukholmassa liikematkalla. Yksittäisistä tapahtumista on kirjattu tuomiokirkon tornin sortuminen kello 3 yöllä. Kolme neljäsosaa kaupungista tuhoutui ja tulipalossa kuoli ainakin 17 henkilöä. Arviolta pari sataa loukkaantui. Muun ohessa suurin osa Akatemiantalon kirjastosta tuhoutui ja 40.000:sta niteestä vain 800 säästyi. Kaupungin asukasluku 1820-30 -luvuilla oli n. 13.000 henkeä. Palon jälkeen, lokakuun 25. päivänä 1827 päätettiin yliopisto siirtää Helsinkiin. Tämän onnettomuuden vuoksi silloisen Suomen suurruhtinaskunnan hallitsija, Venäjän tsaari antoi Turulle 10 vuoden verovapauden. Uudelleenrakentamista varten kerättiin lahjoituksia järjestämällä tanssiaisia mm. Lontoossa ja Pietarissa. Uusi kaupunkiarkkitehtuuri laadittiin Carl Ludwig Engelin suunnitelman pohjalta. Uusi asemakaava oli väljä leveine katuineen, eikä kaksikerroksisia puutaloja saanut rakentaa. Kaupunki jälleenrakennettiin n. 20 vuodessa. Uusi kaupunki oli pinta-alaltaan laajempi kuin edellinen väljemmän asemakaavansa vuoksi. Kaikkiaan Turku oli palanut n. 30 kertaa ennen tätä tapausta.
Kätkö sijaitsee lähellä alkuperäistä palon syttymispaikkaa ja se on nimetty samalla nimellä kuin Turun hakemus Euroopan kulttuuripääkaupungiksi 2011. Lisätietoja aiheesta "Turku palaa" -hankkeen sivuilta.

Turku on fire
The most destructive city burn in the Nordic countries started in the evening of September 4th 1827 about 9 pm. It started in the yard of merchant Helman, who at the time was on a business trip in Stockholm. About certain individual events the collapsing of the belltower of the Cathedral was observed to happen at 03 am. About three quarters of the city was destroyed and at least 17 persons were killed. About two hundred was injured. Among others, only 800 of the 40.000 books in the library of the Academy House was saved. At the time the population of the city was around 13.000 people. After the fire, October 25th 1827 a decision was made to move the Academy to Helsinki. Because of this disaster the Emperor of the Grand Duchy of Finland, the Tsar of Russia, gave 10 years exemption of taxes to Turku. Funds were raised for the rebuilding of the city by organizing ball in London and St. Petersburg. The new architecture was made after a plan made by Carl Ludwig Engel. The new city plan was wide with it's broad streets and it was prohibited to build two storey wooden houses. The city was rebuilded in about 20 years. The new city was much larger than the old one due to the new plan. In all Turku was burned about 30 timed before this disaster.
