Geocache Description:

The cache is located on the edge of Oil Creek.

During the Oil Era, fires and floods were not uncommon in the surronding communities. The most devestating of these was the fire and flood of 1892. The floods came first to Oil Creek when heavy rains washed out a dam at Spartansburg. High waters rushed into Titusville on June 5th, and then down through the valley, sweeeping debris and undermining storage tanks along the route. Vapors were thick from the spilled oil and naphtha. The prime source of the naphtha was a ruptured tank at the old Keystone refinery located 2 miles upstream from Oil City on Oil Creek. The thick vapors were ignited by fires at local refineries and other businesses. The huge explosions swept throughout the flats of Oil City and caused mass destruction and devistation. Homes, businesses, and lives were destroyed. The buildings were leveled along Oil City's Main Street from the creek to the highway. Seventy-two died in Tiusville and fifty-seven in Oil City. The transient population made an accurate body count difficult due to victims having plummeted down the creek into the river. The bodies were found throughout the river valley as far south as Pittsburgh. Hundreds were injured and left homeless.
