The Spare Rib Traditional Cache
Wis Kid: As there's been no cache to find for months, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it.

March 2011, Cache of the Month
It's time for another cache on Rib Mountain. The DNR acquired the former 3M quarry on Rib Mountain in 2006 and this land has been added to Rib Mountain State park. Long range plans are to establish trails, but who can wait for that? State park fees apply, park all the way on top!
Beyond the Green trail.. .. beyond the Blue trail.. .. beyond the Red trail, is .. .. Bushwacking! It's not as bad as it sounds. There have been many hikers through the area and it is crisscrossed with trails, both animal and human. The cache is located at an elevation of 1727 ft., which is the same elevation as the 'Three Bad Ribs, waypoint #2. However, that doesn't make it a walk in the park. The terrain out to the cache is up and down, and of course there are a few rocks. It takes me 35 minutes just to walk out to the cache and back knowing the way, so this won't be a 12 minute River Raid. There is an old fence about half way out to the cache, which was the old line between Rib Mountain park and 3M land, but I used three different openings on two trips out to scout and place the cache. This is NOT an area to let the young kids run free. There are steep cliffs especially at the cache site. Once at the cache site you can look down into the quarry and see many examples of rock graffiti. While certainly not as impressive as the Nazca Lines in Peru, the shapes of a turtle, ram & eagle can easily be seen. This is also an area where turkey vultures like to hang out and it can be a bit spooky when they come in close to check you out. You will not have to put yourself in a dangerous situation to retrieve the cache, but please be careful near the edge. The Geocache Notification Form has been submitted to William H. Bursaw of the Wisconsin DNR. Geocaches placed on Wisconsin Department of Natural Resouce managed lands require permission by means of a notification form.
