A good family hike -- relatively easy hike and find.
Beaver Dam Cache sits near the water of the Heath Hen Meadow Brook in the heart of Heath Hen Meadow -- duh. The cache is less than 30 feet off the trail and relatively easy to find near what appears to be a permanent Beaver Dam. The terrain is easy with many well-used and well-marked trails. Heath Hen Meadow Conservation Land, comprising wetlands, streams, meadows and upland woods, together with Heath Hen Meadow Brook, take their name from the abundant, partidge-like relative of the prairie chicken that became extinct early in the 20th century. The conservation land is home to a variety of wildlife including beaver, skunk, racoon, opossum, deer, ducks, partidge and an occasional blue heron. Additionally song and water birds are abundant. A footbridge spans the Heath Hen Meadow Brook crossing on top of the beaver dam. The bridge connects the Heath Hen conservation land with the Mount Hope Cemetery woodland. Many trails criss-cross the woods on the Cemetery/woodland side of the bridge. Approaching the cache from the Mount Hope Cemetery side of the brook is just as easy and offers more abundant parking (at N42.27.904 W071.28.540). The main entrance is from the Robbins Street Cul-de-sac (at N42.27.540 W071.28.388).
