Geocache Description:

This is the final cache placed for the 5th Scottish Cache Bash - Gathering in the Glens - we almost made it to 70

Cache is a lick and lick container

This cache is set in Lera wood, close to the infamous quarry, where lived a witch called Lera Gabble. She lived alone with her two cats, Topsy and Turvy, and spent most of her time going down and collecting berries and herbs to make potions. One of her potions was reputed to turn a rabbit into a man, another would turn her victim to stone but it was a love potion which caused her downfall.

Lera set her sights on the local laird and vowed that both him and all his land would eventually be hers. (even though he was already betrothed to another) She mixed one of her most powerful love potions which she slipped into his hipflask when he was out on Hunters Hill. He sipped the drink and was instantly attracted to Lera, who took her opportunity. Soon she was living as the Lady of the Manor. She treated the servants and farmworkers terribly - using her witchcraft on them if they objected to their treatment. The Laird eventually realised what was going on and sunk to his knees  begging her to stop. She refused and turned him into stone.

When locals found out what had happened they reported Lera, who was arrested, tried and found guilty of witchcraft.

She was burned upside down at the stake on the 6th September 1769 after being subjected to seventy lashings. As was traditional the fire was lit by one man for every year of the witches life. As the sixty nine men lit the flames she cursed every one of them with her Exalt Conundrum curse.  Her moans and screams as the dreadful punishment was carried out could be heard  for miles. To this day in the quarry at dusk, the sound of the last lick of the whip and distant moan can be heard.
