An easy to access cache at the entrance of the Martinez Hacienda.
Padre Martinez was a priest that lived in Taos in the 1840s. He was beloved by all and befriended by Governor Bent. As such, he was able to have a pretty nice lifestyle. His hacienda exemplifies the status that he held. When he died they say he had over 40 pair of socks. At first thought, the comment means nothing. But think back. Way back. All those socks were hand made; sheared from sheep, washed, spun and fitted. Nobody we know wears handmade stockings. This is merely an illustration of how the community cared for their priest. Every year, the Martinez Hacienda is opened up for a community festival that has food and art and music. It’s a grand time had by all. What is interesting about this event is that most of the peddlers there are named Martinez. And most of these folks claim to be related to a celibate priest. Either that or he meant celebrate. ? Moving right along, this festival is held annually usually when the wool festival takes place and that is in late September or early October. Most anytime you go, it should be reasonably quiet with the exception of a couple of weekends. Even if the museum and complex is closed you can still have access to the cache. The cache itself is an Altoids tin.
