Geocache Description:

The co-ordinates are for St Michael's Church car park, Liverpool Old Road, Much Hoole. You need to obtain some information here, before a short walk along a country road to the cache. The road is sometimes busy.

On 8 June 2004 astronomers from many parts of the world gathered in this church-yard to observe the planet Venus passing between Earth and the Sun - the famous Transit of Venus, and to pay tribute to the brilliant young astronomer, Jeremiah Horrocks, who predicted the event and correctly plotted the course of the 1639 transit, with very few scientific aids. He was the curate at St Michael's Church and lived in Carr House, Bretherton, about 1km south of the church. There is plenty of information on the Internet for anyone interested. The cache is close to the route that he would have taken when walking between Carr House and the church, but first you must obtain some information from the church-yard. 1. In which year was the lych gate erected? That year, minus 1507 = ABC 2. What is the telephone number of the Reader? The last two digits are DE. See following note:- Update 9 November 2011 - information about The Reader seems to have been removed, following some recent adverse publicity. The revised requirement is as follows:- There is a stone tablet in the car park wall inscribed "Rebuilt 19??. Lord Lilford" D = third digit minus 7 E = fourth digit plus 4 The cache is at N53, 41.ABC W002, 49.DE5 Jeremiah Horrocks would be extremely chuffed to know that people are following in his footsteps using satellite navigation. If the church is open, it's well worth a look inside. If not, you may be able to spot some stained glass windows dedicated to Jeremiah Horrocks from the outside.
