Orestenen

Orestenen

In the middle of Tybjerg wood approximately 3 km west of Tybjerg church, an old giant stone is located, which as time has passed has been called Asestenen, Dansestenen, Tybjergstenen or Orestenen, very impressive - and heavy. The most common name used is Orestenen which refers to the location an "ore" (old Danish word), which is an uncultivated area or glade in the wood. The tradition says, that at the time the white church at Tybjerg raised on Tybjerg hill, a mean sorceress sat on the island Tåsinge and stared towards Zeeland. The more the tower raised over the horizon, the more mean she got, and at last she tied her suspender around the huge stone, and ran up into the tower of Bregninge church, and from here she throw the stone towards Tybjerg church. Unfortunately the suspender broke and the stone did not hit the church, but instead it dropped down in the wood west of the church.

Orestenen

In the real world the facts are, that it is an erratic block of granite, a so called migrating rock, a huge block of granite, which during the Ice Age was pushed by the glaciers to the spot where it is now. The stone is approximately 4,75 mtr. long, 3,75 mtr. wide, 2,75 mtr. high on the front, and 1,75 mtr. high on the back.

The many initials and dates which are carved in to the front of the stone, are the initials of the owners of the nearby Tybjerg manor and the dates where they toke possession of the manor. Some irregularities have been immortalized in the granite, as not all of the data are correct.
