Geocache Description:

Lonesome Dove

The novel Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry is based on historical accounts of two cattlemen from Texas, who set out on a cattle drive to Montana. Augustus McCrae patterned after Oliver Loving and Woodrow F. Call after Charles Goodnight. The movie Lonesome Dove also is based on these men lives. Charles Goodnight would be the patron saint of all cowboys as he developed the cattle industry as it stands today. The chuckwagon (a cowboy's portable kitchen wagon used on the cattle trails) was invented by Charles Goodnight in 1866. Goodnight, a former Texas Ranger, owned the first cattle ranch in the Texas Panhandle, called the JA Ranch, located in the Palo Duro Canyon. This Canyon is nine miles south of Claude Tx on Highway 207. Tis a real pretty view where the highway cross the canyon. Goodnight helped create one of the major cattle trails, the Goodnight-Loving Trail, which was a cattle drive route from Texas that led into eastern New Mexico and Colorado. This cache locates the Gravesite of Charles Goodnight outside of Goodnight Texas. There exist a cache that locates the gravesite of Oliver Loving in Weatherford Texas. It is named The Texas Cattle Drive Cache GCNK73. ***************************************************************************************** Park at N 35° 02.813 W 101° 10.480 Do not drive off estabished road that ends about here.
