School Knott is a great small hill overlooking Windermere. It has all the components for a Lake District hillock - well 'mown' grassy hillside, interspersed with small rocky outcrops, a fabulous view of a large lake, its own small tarn and a backdrop of mountains. The houses of the town lap up its flanks but give way to a new community woodland planted to commemorate the Queen's 50 years as monarch.
It can be approached from several directions. The Dales Way runs close by and several lanes and footpaths cross the area. One good starting point is at the parking coordinates given below.
The woodland and the summit area are open access land. Have a good walk - pick a nice day so you can enjoy the great views!
"Thank goodness I was never sent to school; it would have rubbed off some of the originality."
